K Nails is A Landmark in Carrollwood
For 17 years Susan Nguyen has watched the evolution of K Nails Salon at 14604 N. Dale Mabry Highway. Through multiple owners with fresh, new approaches and business plans, one thing has remained constant in the upscale salon – Susan. At one point, in the early years, she purchased the business herself, sold it after a few years, and still stayed on to work with the new owners.
Four years ago, she had the opportunity to buy the business again with her sister Ninh and has been busy adding the special touches that make K Nails are huge for both women and men – like offering a complimentary soda, water or glass of wine.
“Lynn and Michael (previous owners) gave me a chance,” said Susan. “They’re like family – like a brother and a sister.” And being like family is what Susan prides herself on – whether it is her long-term employees or her many long-time returning clients who often“only stop coming because they’ve passed.” Susan dabbed her eyes with a tissue at the memory. She has watched middle-schoolers who came for their first manicure mature into high school students with mani / pedi for prom to newlyweds, proud parents and grandparents.
Much like the 80s TV show Cheers, K Nails is that friendly place where everybody knows your name. Bound by the highest commitment to safety and hygiene, Susan uses safe sterilization techniques and “one-time-use” tub liners for pedicures.
Each client gets his or her own set of nail products. Each personal nail kit is retrieved for each salon visit. K Nails’ business motto is all about doing the best job possible and being a friendly, welcoming salon.“We are careful, clean and sanitary,” she said.

Specialists in manicures and pedicures, Susan said, “We take time to do and give a very good massage. We help our clients relax. ”For clients seeking the popular pink and white acrylic nails, Susan uses only the best products – CND powder and liquid – that is beautiful, natural looking, long-lasting and never turns a yellow color, like lesser products.Cally Catania, a client that has been part of Susan’s salon family since its inception said, “I have been getting my nails done at K Nails for 17 years. Susan said that those types of creative challenges are fun to try to replicate.“It’s usually just two fingernails or toenails (that have a special design),” she explained. “We just painted a turkey for Thanksgiving.”

For those into a pampering, K Nails provides relaxing facials in 30 minutes and 60-minute increments.“We clean the skin, use a steam machine, remove blackheads, apply a facial mask, and provide a facial massage,” Susan said.
On a weekly basis, Susan picks a new “color of the week” for her clients to try. Hundreds of additional color choices and brands like shellac of OPI, CND, Perfect Match, Gelish, and Cuccio colors line the walls of the salon. “They have excellent service here and the ladies are all very good,” said the customer of over 5 years, Kay Jones.
